April 2021 Newsletter
Welcome to Spring!

The beauty of flowers blooming, the smell of fresh cut grass, baseball underway and the sounds of patrons cheering at the Masters. For most of us in our industry, Spring also signifies the beginning the employee benefit selling season. Now is the time we all sharpen our knowledge, line up our resources and define our value proposition for our clients.

Our goal as an association is to help you increase your knowledge and broaden your resources to better serve your clients. Our website, Monthly Newsletter and Monthly Webinar Series are all designed with these goals in mind.

If there are specific areas of our business where you feel you need more insight, please let us know.

As the administered vaccines go up and restrictions are lifted, we hope there will be opportunities soon to have in-person meetings! Until then, let’s stay connected virtually – and tell your friends and colleagues to join EBPA of Southern California!

Pacific Beyond Money: The Rest of Retirement
Retirement planning for many financial professionals today consists of helping clients first build a sufficient nest egg and then formulating a strategy to provide for a comfortable retirement. However, financial professionals have told us that clients don’t just want to talk about saving, investing, and income; they want to talk about the challenges they will be navigating and experiencing in retirement. Many clients need help with more than just money. They would like to be educated, informed, and connected to the information they need on issues like Social Security, health care, estate planning, and aging. This presentation provides an overview of some of the most common issues your clients will encounter in retirement, along with resources to make your job easier as you help your clients work toward a wealthier and healthier future.

DOL Update: COBRA Subsidy in the ARPA

On March 11, 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 was signed into law providing 100% subsidy for employer-sponsored group health insurance once continued under COBRA and other similar state
continuation of coverage programs for eligible individuals.

This subsidy is to apply from April 1st to September 30, 2021. New Model Notices have been issued by the Department of Labor and can be accessed through their new webpage detailing the matter. Employers should use these and the FAQs to provide updated material and information to all eligible individuals. Notices must be provided 15 to 45 days before the individual’s premium assistance expires.

The design of this plan is to aid millions of lower- and middle-income families by lowering their premiums for their health insurance marketplace. Americans who are uninsured can gain coverage. COVID-19 and the events of the past year have caused many to see a reduction in employment hours, lose their jobs, and their health care. ARPA provides those who would otherwise be subject to no health care the ability to continue coverage until further notice.

The COBRA Subsidy offered by the ARPA does NOT apply to those whose job loss was voluntary or due to gross misconduct. Individuals eligible for other group health plans or Medicare are also exempt from receiving this subsidy.

For more information, please visit the U.S. Department of Labor website or contact your COBRA representatives.
