  Owner Monahan Law Office

  Marilyn A. Monahan is the owner of the Monahan Law Office (San Marcos and Marina del Rey). She focuses her practice on advising employers and consultants on compliance with employee benefit and insurance laws impacting health and welfare plans, including ACA, ERISA, HIPAA, and COBRA, and related Internal Revenue Code provisions. She has served on the board of directors for the Professionals in Human Resources Association (PIHRA), including as president, as secretary of the Employee Benefit Planning Association of Southern California (EBPA), and as an advisor to the Executive Committee of the Solo and Small Firm Section of the California Lawyers Association (CLA). Marilyn currently serves on the PIHRA Foundation board and as an advisor to the PIHRA Government Affairs Team.

  I am a Benefit Compliance Guru and benefits consultant who strives to educate and assist employers with all of their plan administration and compliance needs, through articles, webinars, seminars and podcasts, and personal attention to their specific benefits and compliance needs.

  I started in this business in my early twenties as a benefits auditor and hated it, but learned so much about ERISA and plan requirements that, later in my career, I realized what a gift that first job was. Less than two years later, I was asked to run a third-party administrator for self-funded health plans. With no prior experience, it was either sink or swim, and I refused to drown. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my career, but it was the best start I could have had. I not only swam, but I swam with the best of them. I learned every aspect of benefit administration and compliance, because I had to, and learned that I also wanted to! I’ve now been doing this for over 35 years, and I still seem to learn something new every day, and I enjoy sharing that with our employer clients.

  What I do for our clients is take care of the big things they need and are required to do, like benefit compliance, so that they can focus on what they do in their businesses. We continually educate our clients, with monthly webinars, seminars, articles, weekly podcasts and more, all designed to help employers better understand their benefits and compliance needs, wants and requirements.

  I put a special emphasis on benefits compliance (ERISA, ACA, HIPAA Privacy & Security) and self-funding. I’m a public speaker, published author, podcast host with professional designations including RHU and REBC.

  A lot of people sell health insurance, but I sell trust, knowledge, experience in what we do, and results.
  I’m also a lover of sports, particularly water sports and of course, as someone who grew up in Michigan, hockey!
